Trauma and Biohazard Cleanup - Helpful Information

Ten years ago when I joined all the property management organizations, I wanted to expand our fire and water loss referrals from just insurance companies.  As my property management client base grew, I was asked to help out with trauma and biohazard cleanups.  You see, there were several biohazard companies out there that were monopolizing the industry and charging whatever they wanted.  Our company was able to come in, get the prices and service in line to what was reasonable while being discrete.  We started with one call a month, that grew to three to four a month to now, three to four a week!  While it is really sad that this service of ours is needed, it has become service that is a necessity to our clients.

Just some tidbits for you:

  1. The crime scene clean up industry is in it’s infancy.  There is a lack of certification programs in vocational schools.
  2. Crime scene workers should attend a bio hazard handling training course given by a privately owned school.
  3. California and Florida are the only two states that require crime scene business owners to obtain a trauma waste practitioner permit before work begins.
  4. State and federal regulations govern the disposal of medical waste.
  5. There are strict laws governing vehicles used to transport bio-hazard materials.  Therefore trauma clean companies partner up with large operations that work for hospital and medical facilities to dispose of the waste generated from murder, suicide, accidents and natural deaths.
  6. Most states do not have laws regulating the operation of crime scene businesses.
  7. OSHA maintains strict laws on how businesses and employees handle blood borne pathogens, respiratory risks and working in confined spaces.
  8. Use a company that knows the OSHA on the job safety methods when handling bio hazard waste and working in hazardous areas.  This will reduce potential lawsuits and reduces the risk of accidents.

We are always here to help with any fire, water, mold or trauma loss.
